Melissa Sornik, LCSW

Executive Director

Who I work with

  • Gifted children and adults who need someone who’ll meet them where they are

  • Twice-exceptional children and adults who need someone who’ll respect their strengths while helping with challenges

  • Families who need . . .

I might be a good fit for you or your family if:

  • You want a specialist with years of experience working with gifted and twice-exceptional individuals and their families

  • You’re open to a therapist who will consider you or your child’s needs within the family as a system rather than just as an individual problem

  • You want to focus on building resilience, regulation, and healthy relationships over the long-term

Who I am

As a licensed clinician, I have been working with gifted individuals and their families since 2001. I was the co-founder of Twice-Exceptional Children’s Advocacy Inc. and served as the president of the organization from 2002 to 2023. Now, my practice specializes in support and services for gifted individuals, including 2e individuals who are gifted with social, emotional, and/or learning challenges. I manage all programs and services, including training and supervision, collaborate with a network of experienced independent professionals, and work directly with gifted children, adolescents, and adults in a therapeutic capacity.

Reflecting on my educational experience as a gifted artist and writer with certain learning challenges (including struggles with math and memorization) and reliving a similar experience as a parent of a gifted child, I have a strong connection with this population and the challenges they can face navigating a system that was not built to meet their needs. [come back to this sentence] I have worked with many gifted individuals, especially those whose gifts, talents, and unique emotional needs aren't typically recognized or supported in traditional school or work settings, or those with certain challenges that overshadow their gifts and abilities. Believing that resilience and healthy relationships are fundamental to personal and professional success and fulfillment, I have developed the B.E.S.T. model — four key elements I uses in my work with clients.

In my practice, I collaborate with a collective of teachers, clinicians, and mentors to provide onsite and online client services and support. Each clinician has been thoughtfully chosen for their own gifts, talents, and abilities. A collaborative sharing of ideas, unique talents, and creative synergy results in the creation of programs, projects, and activities that are as innovative and unique as the individuals they were created for. In addition to my current work as a therapist, I am a 2e consultant for school districts and private schools. I also supervise and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate social workers through training, internships, and licensure.

Over the course of my career, I have:

  • Developed programs for gifted and 2e children and adolescents

  • Conducted professional development sessions for public and private schoos and colleges in the NY tri-state area

  • Authored several articles on the subject of twice-exceptionality

  • Presented lectures and workshops at regional and national conferences

  • Served as an advisory board member of GiftedNYS

  • Co-authored and co-presented the first online course on 2e for the National Association of Social Workers' NY Chapter.

  • Served on district and county Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) boards

  • Taught my own undergraduate course on a systems model and approach to working with children with special needs and their families as an adjunct professor at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY

  • Acted as the director for admissions and outreach at a school for gifted and 2e learners in NYC

Fun Fact: I play the guitar. Ask me how to play [song].
