Parents and Caregivers Need Support Too
“Was I like this too?”
Parenting a twice-exceptional child can be a journey of both joy and overwhelm. It can awaken deeper questions including coming to terms with one’s own neurodivergence. This can open the door to self-compassion as well as self-doubt.
In the clinical practice, we see the impact of both intergenerational trauma and neurodivergence on parenting. Parents may be navigating not only their child’s emotional landscape, but also the echoes of their own childhood experiences—whether that includes being misunderstood, unsupported or held to unrealistic goals and expectations. Past experiences can influence reactions, self-perception, and expectations of how parents and their child should be. Consequently, many parents experience:
Anxiety
Depression
Burnout
Emotional dysregulation
Persistent feelings of guilt, shame or inadequacy
Difficulty sleeping
Loneliness
Marital challenges
Irritability
Self-doubt
Feel stuck or deeply uncertain about how to parent your child
Feeling isolated or cut off from friends and family
Using the practice’s BEST approach to treatment as a framework, we offer trauma-informed, neurodivergence-affirming therapy that addresses these specific concerns. This eclectic approach to treatment includes aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help manage anxiety, self-critical thoughts, and perfectionism; Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore inner parts shaped by trauma and build internal compassion; Narrative Therapy to help you rewrite limiting stories inherited from past generations; Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to support emotional regulation and present-moment awareness; Psycho-education around giftedness, neurodivergence, and emotional development; and Parent Coaching tailored to 2e dynamics, empowering you with practical tools and by harness newfound insight.
